Dr. Ritter is Chair of the Physical Sciences Council for IBM Research. A group in the council focuses on the experimental and theoretical science of quantum information, especially as applied to quantum computing. The IBM Quantum Experience was launched by a group he led in May of 2016, allowing users to access and program a five qubit quantum processor through a GUI-enabled cloud interface. Dr. Ritter received M.S., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1987. Dr. Ritter was the recipient of the 1982 American Physical Society Apker Award for his work on the optical and magnetic properties of solids.
