As part of the Extreme Electronics show-within-the-show at SEMICON West, technical sessions and exhibits will focus on the growing, emerging, and adjacent microelectronics markets, including OLEDs and plastic electronics, MEMS, and high-brightness LEDs. In this week's newsletter, Paula Doe looks at the opportunities and manufacturing challenges in bringing OLED displays and lighting to market. We also continue our look into key semiconductor process and manufacturing challenges in part two of Debra Vogler's story on 193i and sub-22nm technology. | ||||||

by Paula Doe Technology for making electronic circuits with organic materials, non-vacuum processes, and flexible substrates has made striking progress, but it's been a challenge to find applications where the new technologies--and the whole new ecosystems needed to integrate them into useful products--offer must-have advantages. Flexible and large-area OLED displays and lighting are perhaps the largest potential opportunity, and hybrid products using solution-processed layers and flexible substrates are starting to come to market. More Beyond 193i and Sub-22nm: Tackling the Cost and Technical Drivers– Part 2 By Debra Vogler The economic realities are as daunting as the technological challenges associated with addressing new transistor architectures, new materials, the introduction of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUVL), 3D ICs, and the transition to 450mm manufacturing - all occurring, more or less, in parallel. Semiconductor fab tool makers see sequential increase in Q1 Semiconductor manufacturing equipment billings and bookings were virtually tied in Q1 2012, reports SEMI, with $10.61 billion in billings and $10.07 in bookings. This is a 13-14% improvement sequentially, and 9% below the same quarter last year. (June 13, ElectroIQ) ITC, CAST, IEEE, and Test Vision Team Up on Test Programs at SEMICON West In cooperation with International Test Conference (ITC), Collaborative Alliance for Semiconductor Test (CAST), IEEE, and SEMI, SEMICON West 2012 will feature the latest trends, technology, solutions and methodologies in semiconductor test. In addition to presentations by industry experts in conference TechXPOTs, an expanded Test Vision 2020 Conference will again be held in conjunction with SEMICON West, providing critical information and networking opportunities for test industry buyers, managers, developers and technologists. (June 15, SEMI) The Next Transistor Technologies such as strained silicon, high-k metal gates and FinFETs have enabled smaller transistors, which improve packing density and lower the cost per transistor. Moving forward, the goal is to continue to increase density and reduce cost, but also to improve energy efficiency by limiting leakage and lowering the power supply.
