The exponential increase of mobile data traffic, driven by smartphone and tablets (and growing M2M), requires disrupting approaches in the definition of the future 5G Heterogeneous Network. Indeed four main axes are proposed to tackle the 5G requirements in terms of data rate, latency, reliability and power consumption:
- increase the spectral efficiency using post-OFDM multi-carrier modulation schemes
- design low cost, low power, integrated circuits for sensors and IoT
- provide efficient, versatile and large bandwidth Front-End Module for multi-band and channel aggregation below 6GHz
- offload a great part of the data traffic to millimeter wave small cell access points
After a short overview of the design challenges related to the above, the most recent outcomes from Leti’s research on 5G will be presented, based on innovative RF architecture and advanced technologies. Besides a focus on key enabling technologies in millimeter wave circuit, packaging and antenna design will be made, enabling multi-user access and backhauling in future 5G Heterogeneous Network.
