Industry Pioneer Jim Morgan Shares Applied Wisdom

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- July 12, 2017 -- “Excellent managers are not born. They develop by learning.”  With that quote from his new book, Applied Wisdom, industry pioneer Jim Morgan, chairman emeritus of Applied Materials, sets out a philosophy that not only built his own extraordinary career but also offers SEMICON attendees a perspective on how to develop the management and leadership skills necessary for organizations to succeed.

Applied Materials is one of Silicon Valley’s great success stories and helped propel the digital revolution. Jim Morgan ran Applied Materials for nearly three decades— one of the longest tenures of any Fortune 500 CEO. The company was near bankruptcy when he joined in 1976. When he retired as CEO in 2003, Applied was the multi-billion dollar global leader in the semiconductor equipment and display industry.

In his SEMICON keynote, Jim shares his views on building a winning culture and the leadership lessons he learned over a long career.  Those lessons are shared in his new book, Applied Wisdom: Bad News is Good News and Other Insights that Can Help Anyone Become a Better ManagerJim will be signing paperback copies of his book at Booth #5630 (NORTHin Moscone Center on July 11 and 12 from 10:00am through 5:00pm.

The former Cayuga, Indiana farm boy grew up herding cows, harvesting corn, and working in his family’s vegetable cannery. He ended up managing high-tech innovation on a global scale as he led Applied Materials to become a worldwide technology leader. Along the way, Jim collected and tested his management principles in such realms as the military, industry, venture capital, and on corporate boards and government commissions, and in the non-profit arena.  Advisor to three U.S. Presidents, Jim was named one of "The Good CEOs" by BusinessWeek and one of the top five "Best CEOs" in America by Worth Magazine. Jim is a recipient of the 1996 National Medal of Technology for his industry leadership and for his vision in building Applied Materials into the world's leading semiconductor equipment company, a major exporter and a global technology pioneer which helps enable the Information Age. Awarded by the President of the United States, the Medal of Technology recognizes technological innovators who have made lasting contributions to America's competitiveness and standard of living.  He is director emeritus and past president of SEMI.

Following his keynote, Jim will make available complimentary electronic copies of his book, Applied Wisdom.  An autobiography and a book of pragmatic business advice, Applied Wisdom tells Jim’s story and the remarkable assent of Applied Materials, and is designed to help anyone who wants to learn to make better decisions, manage more effectively, and more successfully lead organizations.
