Delivering on the Promise of Sustainable PV Manufacturing
Event Code: SUBPV
Date / Time, and Location
July 15, 2010, 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM PDT (San Francisco Local Time)
Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco (888 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA)
Description / Purpose
Sustainability in the PV industry is a “win-win” proposition. An industry that produces clean energy in an environmentally responsible manner is a public relations coup and a magnet for socially responsible investment firms. However, for the PV industry to live up to its commitment of responsibly producing clean solar energy, EHS and sustainability risks need to be better understood and managed. On an industry wide basis, a thorough examination of the environment, health, safety, and sustainability burdens posed by the PV manufacturing processes needs to be undertaken and a clear strategy and direction articulated and enacted to ensure sustainability risks are engineered out of the manufacturing processes and supply chain, or are effectively managed.
As a first step toward this reality, SEMI and the PV Group will be hosting a Workshop to identify sustainability priorities (including EHS risks) in the PV industry and make recommendations on approaches to address these priorities. Speakers are asked to directly respond to a set of six (6) sustainability-related questions. These questions are designed to explore problems and solutions in sustainable PV manufacturing. The questions are:
- What are your company's most important sustainability priorities?
- Who is most important at influencing your company's desire to set sustainability priorities?
- Why is your company engaged in corporate sustainability?
- Who is most useful in helping your company achieve its sustainability priorities?
- What obstacles hinder your company's sustainability efforts?
- What resources are most important in your company's sustainability efforts?
During the panel discussing, speakers and audience members will be urged to reach some sort of consensus on sustainability priorities for the PV industry and approaches to address these concerns.
